If you played the original Atari, you'll remember that one of the best games on the system was a title called Battlezone. This tank battle game put you in a 3D world of sorts and used its primitive graphics to give you a very competitive experience. Fast forward to last year, and developer Rebellion brought the series back as a VR title that came to the PS VR, Oculus Rift, and the HTC Vive. Many were sad that they weren't going to get the chance to play the modern version of the classic game. Well now, that's not an issue anymore, as Battlezone Gold Edition is set to come to Xbox One, PS4, PC, and even the Nintendo Switch.
No VR will be required for these versions, naturally, and the game is said to be coming to the consoles and PC in full, which is good for all who want the true full experience. Rebellion gave a statement about the game coming to console and PC in which which they stated,
"Originally released as a PlayStation VR launch title and later for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Battlezone offers hours of exhilarating, futuristic tank warfare in a stunning first-person view. Delivering a procedurally generated campaign for 1-4 players ensuring no two playthroughs are the same, and drop-in, drop-out online co-op play, Battlezone brings back one of gaming's icons like never before.
Battlezone: Gold Edition includes the game and ALL the additional content ever released for it. That's all the tank skins, bobbleheads, and horns, as well as the fantastic Classic Mode based on the original's iconic 80s arcade cabinet.
And anyone who already owns Battlezone on PS4 or PC will automatically upgrade to Battlezone: Gold Edition. That means they'll receive all the extra content and be able to play without a VR headset, all FREE!"
The fact that they are bringing in all the DLC and other content proves that they don't want this version behind the VR version. This means that all the special items, such as a Judge Dredd bobblehead, will be in there, and that's still only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what Battlezone Gold Edition offers.
Visually, Rebellion does very well to replicate the fun and excitement of the original game, all the while making sure the modern day graphics shine through. The customization aspects of the game are top notch as well. You'll be able to create your own tanks in your own style and your own color scheme all the while giving yourself little decals and minor items to help it stand out even more.
But, if you're a purist, and want to match the original experience as best you can, there will be an option to go to the wireframe style that the original Battlezone had. No mere detail has been overlooked.
There's no exact release date for the console and PC version, but it is said to be arriving this Summer. For a closer look at the game, check out the trailer below.
