Is Retro Studios Making A Star Fox Racing Game?

When the Nintendo Switch was announced, Nintendo made a promise that they would do everything in their power to keep the system flush with both first part and third-party titles. And for the most part, they've done exactly that. From March of last year to March of 2018, they've had big releases in 10 of those 12 months. And the other two had good enough releases. However, as the years go on, Nintendo fans know that the other major franchises that are in Nintendo's library will have to be given the spotlight in order for the promise to be maintained. And that includes Star Fox.

Star Fox is a bit of a touchy subject with Nintendo fans. For it started off great, being one of the biggest games on SNES, and then N64. It had two titles on Gamecube, but one of them was Star Fox Adventures, which isn't the most beloved game ever. Assault was much better though. The series skipped a console generation on Wii, but then came to Wii U with the maligned Star Fox Zero. So everyone was praying that the Switch would save the franchise with a kick butt new title. Well, a rumor is circulating many outlets that the next Star Fox game is coming, and it's going to be made by Retro Studios. However, it's not a typical Star Fox game. Instead, it'll be a racing title.

Apparently, it's going to be called Star Fox Grand Prix, and it'll feature the classic characters of Star Fox doing races in the style of Diddy Kong Racing or F-Zero, though the "leak" states it's more on the intense side like the F-Zero franchise is known for. There will also apparently be an "Adventure Mode" of sorts, which means that a story might be attached to the game. There's even a logo attached to the leak to make it sound more credible.

The reaction to this has been very mixed so far, which is rather a par for the course given the history of Nintendo fans. Some fans aren't believing the rumor at all, which might be the safest course of action for now. Others are actually willing to give Nintendo and Retro Studios a chance to "wow" them with this title. This is also fair, as Retro is known for their quality titles, so even if this isn't what players wanted from them, it's likely to still be a good game. A set of players are curious as to whether this is the only game coming out from Retro. The last game they released was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on the Wii U (which recently was ported to Switch), and that was over four years ago. A racing game like this shouldn't take four years to make, what's more, Star Fox Zero, which was meant to be a reboot of the franchise, came out about two years ago. So is it really possible that they were working on just this racing game for four years?

Regardless of whether the rumor is true or not, Nintendo has just earned themselves some more attention for their E3 2018 digital event and Treehouse session. Because everyone will want to know what is real, and what isn't.
