Just before E3 2018, Square Enix released a trailer showing off Kingdom Hearts 3, and revealing that the game had been slightly delayed until January 2019. Many were disappointed with this, but they have made do with it due to the numerous other trailers that came out during E3 last week. And though the game wouldn't be out this year, the director of the game, Tetsuya Nomura, talked with IGN at the show about many aspects of the title that many have had questions on. Here is a round-up of the questions and answers.
First up was a question about the Gummi Ship. This gameplay feature has been in the main games since the original Kingdom Hearts. The Gummi Ship is what Sora, Donald, and Goofy use to break through the barriers of the other worlds, and then they can travel between them at will. It's a mini-game basically, but it allows for a lot of fun and style via customizing the ship. Nomura confirmed that the Gummi Ship is coming back, and it was shown in one of the trailers. But though it will be "basically the same", he hints that there will be more to it, and details will come soon for it.
Another big question that was asked was naturally about the worlds that will and will not be featured in Kingdom Hearts 3. We already know confirmed worlds like Tangled, Frozen, Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Hero 6, Toy Story, Monsters Inc, and a few others. But there's not been a clear indication of what worlds won't be in the game, or what the grand total of worlds visited will be. Nomura wouldn't give a definitive answer, but he did note that not all the worlds of the past main games (or spinoffs) would appear. Which makes sense because if they all did the game would be enormous. Multiple original worlds will return though, and one that will be very playable in Nomura's mind is Twilight Town, which has been a major story point since the first game.
Speaking of Twilight Town, there was a scene in one of the E3 trailers that showed Ratatouille from Pixar helping Sora cook. Nomura was happy to confirm that this is a mini-game that will be playable in Twilight Town. But this also confirms that we're not going to a Paris-themed world. The food you make with Ratatouille will help "increase your status".
Nomura also noted that a "demand" he had for the game before production began all those years ago was that Pixar had to have a world in the game. Specifically, he asked for Toy Story and made sure that Woody and Buzz were featured prominently in it. He's wanted Pixar in Kingdom Hearts for quite a while actually.
Finally, a big question that every Kingdom Hearts fan understands is...if you haven't played all the games...will you understand the story of KH3? Nomura says that they're doing their best to make sure that if you've played the majority of games, you'll be fine. And at the time of this writing, Square Enix has launched the first "recap episode". These episodes will serve to help those who haven't played all the games know what's going on before Kingdom Hearts 3 releases January 29th, 2019.
