Kingdom Hearts 3 almost assuredly looked like it was coming out in 2018. What with Square Enix outright saying so, holding onto the release date till E3 time, having their own press conference, it all added up to look like we'd be seeing it sometime late this year. In a surprise early announcement before their E3 press conference, the date was revealed at the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour of all things, over in L.A. this past Saturday night. Series director Tetsuya Nomura took to the stage, showing a trailer that fans weren't allowed to film, but one which revealed the official release date: January 29th, 2019. While this means Kingdom Hearts 3 won't be out this year, the good news is that it now has an official date tagged to it, after going all these years with nothing.
Nomura later took to Twitter, via the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter account, to relay the news to everyone else. "We've announced the release day for Kingdom Hearts III ahead of E3 at the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra -World Tour-," he writes. "I'm sorry that we're asking for a little more time than initially planned. Please look forward to other information, including a few trailers at E3. Thank you - Nomura". The timing couldn't have been more perfect with mentioning those 'few trailers', as Microsoft unveiled one the very next day at their E3 conference, and what a crazy one it was. Being the first Kingdom Hearts game to ever come to Xbox consoles, Microsoft showing it felt all too fitting.
The new trailer, which can be viewed below, is a good 3 minutes long and is called the 'Frozen' trailer; you can probably guess why. The whole thing gives us a glimpse into multiple of the game's Disney/Pixar worlds, such as Tangled and Monsters Inc. The big focus was on the Frozen world though, which was a long-rumored and speculated world to be put into KH3. Alongside some very fun looking gameplay, the trailer dives headfirst into pure Kingdom Hearts plot in the last minute, culminating in a shocking reveal at the end that I'm pretty surprised they showed in a trailer. If you're a Kingdom Hearts fan, you won't want to miss this, and hopefully, it eases the wait a little more.
Good news is that Square Enix still has an E3 conference to do (as of the time of this writing). It will be viewable on all streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch at 10 am PT/1 pm ET. Since Nomura mentioned a few trailers, rather than just one, chances are we'll see something entirely different at their showcase to continue the KH3 hype. Other possible things we'll see are things like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the recently revealed Just Cause 4, and maybe something more from the Final Fantasy front. Kingdom Hearts 3 will be releasing first in Japan on January 25th next year, but everywhere else on January 29th. It will be available for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. At the very least, we have this trailer to dig into while we wait for the long-anticipated action RPG. Stay tuned for any updates!
