Make no mistake about it; God of War (2018) was a commercial success. With more than 5 million copies sold in just its first month, it’s safe to say that people have thoroughly enjoyed playing the game. And even though countless memes originated from the game, God of War remains a strong favorite to win the Game of the Year title this year.
The hype behind God of War can be traced back to E3 2016. As soon as the lights dimmed and the live orchestra started playing an ominous theme, you could see the anticipation building. And as the title was revealed, people lost their minds.
The initial hype was further compounded by the fact that prominent game review platforms like IGN and Polygon gave the title a perfect 10/10 rating. All this led to cautious gamers questioning whether the game could truly live up to the hype.
Now that it’s been more than a month since the title was released, we’ve decided to revisit it to see how it holds up since the initial hype has died down. Join us for an unbiased review of Sony’s latest flagship release.
There are countless titles released every year that are dubbed to be great games. The Batman Arkham games and the Ezio trilogy from Assassin’s Creed fall under the same category. And yet, as stunning and beautiful as these games were, they didn’t have a long-term impact on the overall gaming industry.
On the other hand, we have God of War – a game that was released just over a month ago, but looks set to continue redefine the single player gaming experience. In a gaming world obsessed with multiplayer gameplay and loot crates, it’s easy to see why single-player games have died down in recent years. In fact, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 won’t have a single-player story!
With almost every game developer looking to integrate microtransactions and claim the largest numbers of active players, people have lost sight of what traditionally made games great. As fun as multiplayer games are, they often pale in comparison to the level of immersion offered by their single-player counterparts via a compelling story arc.
When done correctly, a single player story can transcend the barriers of your screen and resonate with you emotionally. For example, as fun as Assassin’s Creed 2 is, what we remember from the game is Ezio Auditore failing to *spoiler alert* save his father and his brothers from the gallows.
This is where the God of War continues to excel. The game is incredibly fun and engaging but it’s not at the cost of the pacing of the game. The tone has completely shifted from the days when Kratos was a raging alcoholic with every Greek god on his hit list.
Now our favorite murdering psychopath is a father. He’s calmer, much more level-headed and genuinely tries to be a role model to his young son, Aterus. This comes as a welcome change of pace because it makes for a much more emotional and well-rounded story.
That’s not to say that God of War has completely abandoned everything that made it great; you can still kill goliaths and monsters and mythical creatures and pummel your way through enemies. There are also puzzles to solve and the dry-humor that Kratos is renowned for.
All in all, God of War has let go of a lot of baggage that was holding it back and what it has added to its arsenal has been a breath of fresh air. Prepare for a fun-filled ride that offers you the good, ol’ God of War experience but with new embellishments that feel like much-welcome necessities.
At the end of the day, God of War (2018) is exactly what the initial reviews told us it would be,
“The perfect return of a flawed fan-favorite”
