Sega's no slouch when it comes to re-releasing many of their classic console titles onto current-day consoles. The previous generation, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii all saw re-releases or packs in some form or another. More recently, Steam received its own Sega Genesis/Mega Drive collection. Now, the publisher has announced that they'll be putting out a new Sega Genesis Classics Collection for PS4 and Xbox One. It will have all the titles the Steam version has, plus some new ones.
This isn't just a simple packaged collection of titles, however. This collection will have a handful of new features that can be applied to multiple or all of the titles; features that give the titles a more modern spin if you so choose. These features range from things like mirror mode to make levels more challenging, save states, achievements, and even online (and offline) multiplayer. And if you're just feeling like you want some visual changes, the collection will have those too in the form of graphic enhancement filters, though the specifics of these aren't known yet.
This collection will feature all the big classics you've probably heard of, and maybe even some you haven't! Multiple Sonic titles, Streets of Rage, Toejam & Earl, Phantasy Star 2, and Altered Beast are just some of the over 50 classic games to be found in Sega Genesis Classics. With all the above mentioned modern feature additions, it'll be like playing some of these older games through a new lens. While they have all been re-released at one point or another on multiple platforms in the past, it's refreshing to give them a bump forward, not only for existing fans but for new generations of gamers as well who never got a chance to play through these games.
Curiously, Sega Genesis Classics won't be releasing on the Nintendo Switch, despite being available on every other major platform with this release. A spokesperson for the publisher stated in a response to IGN, "Sega is focused on the launch of SMDC/SGC on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and the update to the PC version," leaving it at that. Whether this rules out a Switch release in the future is hard to say at this point.
You can preorder the retail version of the collection to receive a double sided Streets of Rage/Golden Axe poster, which is sure to entice the collectors out there (including myself). The already available PC version of Sega Genesis Classics won't be left out of the festivities either though. Owners of this version will receive a free update to it that adds Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole, the same day as the release of the console versions of the collection. Sega Genesis Classics is set to release on May 29th for PS4 and Xbox One. You can view the super stylish reveal trailer for it on its very own website, which you can go to here.
