With a new Super Smash Bros. on the way for the Nintendo Switch, many have begun to wonder what Nintendo characters will be on the character roster this time around. Mario, Link, Samus, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness and Jigglypuff were all the characters that appeared in the original Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 and have appeared in every SMB since. These characters along with the two newly announced Splatoon Inkling characters will be in this game undoubtedly, as far as who else is still to be announced. This leaves us room for some wishlists as to who we would love to see in the game. I have assembled a list of 10 new characters I would love to see in the Nintendo Switch’s upcoming Super Smash Bros. I will start my list at number 10 and work my way down to my top number 1 pick.
Toad is my number ten pick. He has been in many Super Mario games throughout the years. Often acting as a support character that helps you one way or another in a Mario game, he has had many rolls fighting as well. In Super Mario 2 he is a playable character with many abilities such as throwing vegetables and various other items and being able to jump really high after holding down on the D-Pad to power up his jump. He is also one of the quickest characters of the 4. In the Mariokart games, he is one of the racers with the best acceleration. He is a brilliant professor in Luigi’s Mansion who makes the Polterguest 3000 vacuum cleaner that Luigi uses to suck up ghosts. In many Mario Party and other Mario themed sports games such as Mario Tennis he is a playable character. This could give him an arsenal of weapons he could use somewhat like Princess Peach wields in SSB. He is often an underrated character, but with his speed and intelligence, he could make for a formidable character in Super Smash Bros. Switch.
At number nine I have Tingle from the Legend of Zelda games. He is a goofy 35-year-old man who dresses in all green somewhat like Link that is obsessed with fairies and the Zelda currency rupees. First appearing in Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask selling dungeon maps to link for rupees, he has gone off to become the star of his own games. He is usually riding or hanging on to a hot air balloon as he waits for Link to approach him. Tingle could use this balloon to get back onto a platform if he was in Super Smash Bros. He could be given some type of attack that involves throwing rupees at you or maybe burning you with the hot air balloon. Maybe some type weapon or another form having to do with a fairy since he’s obsessed with them. He could be a decent character in SMB if done correctly.
In number eight I have the Pokemon Scyther. First appearing as one of the original 151 in Pokemon Red and Blue, he has been in many games and movies since. He is a large green preying mantis looking pokemon with his types being bug and flying. Scyther has very sharp sword-like arms that he could to defend himself as well as flying and being very fast. His speed, flight, and slashing arms could make him a very strong Super Smash Bros. character.
In number seven I have another pokemon Blaziken. He first appeared in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire as the third form of the starter pokemon Torchic. He is a fire and fighting type pokemon that would fit perfectly in SMB. He has many fire moves that he could learn such as Blaze Kick in which he lunges forward with a kick that does fire damage. He has many fighting moves he could use and his most powerful would be Hi-Jump Kick which is a running jump kick that does recoil damage to himself if he misses. The pokemon Hitmonlee uses this move in the original Super Smash Bros. when he jumps out of a Pokeball. Blaziken was also a character in Pokken Tournament game and he has a wide variety of moves from there that could be used in SSB.
Number six on the list would be Isaac from the first Golden Sun game. He was the party leader and Earth Adept of the group. While a skilled warrior with a sword, he can also use Earth magic that involves using rocks, mountains, earthquakes, and vines to attack opponents. Although he does appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a computer-assisted helper when the Assist Trophy item is used, he is not a playable character on the roster. I believe he would make a great character in SSB Switch.
Mother Brain from the Metroid series is my number five pick. She is the last boss in almost every Metroid game and would make a great addition to Super Smash Bros. You first fight her in the first Metroid game released in 1986 as the last boss. While she was only a giant brain in the first Metroid, in Super Metroid she was given a gross looking body that kind of resembles the alien species from the movie Alien. She shoots a very powerful plasma beam and almost kills Samus when the grown-up Metroid comes back to save her from Mother Brain's final blow. She is a machine and flesh hybrid being that drips drool from her mouth and shoots some type of plasma breath that does major damage.
At number four on the list is an aquatic race from the Legend of Zelda games, the Zora. They are fish-like humanoids that can breathe underwater and can use the fins on their arm to defend themselves like a sword. In Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask you can transform into a Zora who plays the guitar. They can be made into a cool SMB character.
My 3rd on the list is a Goron from the Legend of Zelda games. In Majora’s Mask, they also appear as the drum playing character you can transform into with a mask. They can roll around very quickly similar to Sonic and kill enemies by rolling through them. They can also shield themselves with their hard hide by crouching into a ball. They are immune to fire and eat rocks and grow bomb flowers. This can make for an interesting character on Super Smash Bros. Switch.
Number two on the list is Zero from the Mega Man series. While first appearing in Mega Man X in 1993 as another hero that helps Mega Man, he eventually becomes a playable character alongside Mega Man X and eventually the star of his own games. He is a more human-like robot hero with long blonde hair and red and white armor. Zero carries his signature Z-saber that can slice up enemies up close and also a blaster like Mega Man which he can use is some games. He can dash and wall climb just as good as Mega Man as well as being able to gather and use his enemies powers after he kills them. I believe he would be a nice addition to the roster.
My number one pick would have to be Bomberman or White Bomber as he has been known in some games. Bomberman has had many games since his debut on the NES in 1983 and would make a great character for Super Smash Bros. He is a well-renowned robot hero that can create bombs and use them to kill his enemies. Over the years he has been given many abilities that he can acquire with upgrades. He can increase the damage of his bombs, make them sticky spike bombs, and even make them remote bombs. In Bomberman 64 he uses them to climb to higher locations or solve puzzles with them. He is able to kick them to make them slide across the floor and he can even throw them really far. All these upgrades and abilities could really make for a great SMB character.
Hopefully, you like my Top 10 List and agree with my number one pick. There have been many new characters included in Super Smash Bros. for each generation of Nintendo consoles over the years. Some have been welcomed by fans and some have not. Below is a list of the characters that have appeared in the Super Smash Bros. games. You are encouraged to comment on this post as to what characters you would like to see in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Switch or about the ones I listed above.
