Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is joining the ranks of Splatoon 2 for big Nintendo Switch titles receiving expansive DLC. Back in January, during a Nintendo Direct, Nintendo and Ubisoft revealed the second DLC pack for the game, which is already shaping up to be much more sizable than the previous pack. The biggest reveal of it was the inclusion of Donkey Kong as a playable character, but outside of that character reveal trailer, we didn't get any more info on the expansion up to this point. Thankfully, Ubisoft's official YouTube channel put out a new trailer the other day that shows us exactly what we can expect in the Donkey Kong Adventure DLC: a brand new story, new levels, and new gameplay mechanics from the Kong himself.
According to Ubisoft, the pack as a whole is about as lengthy as 25 percent of the main game's story mode, i.e. roughly 10 hours or so. Featuring an all-new story, the DLC puts you in the role of three characters: Rabbid Kranky Kong, Donkey Kong, and the main game's Rabbid Peach. The story will cover four unique zones, similar in size to the zones of the actual game, and each with their own theme. All of the zones stay in a consistent style to what you'd expect in a typical Donkey Kong game: tropical islands, forests, beaches, and even unique enemies like the tribal Rabbids. If you played through all of Mario + Rabbids, everything you loved from that experience is all present here, each zone being filled with puzzles and satisfying exploration amidst the strategic turn-based battles.
And that, of course, brings us on to the meat and potatoes of the whole thing: The new battle mechanics. Donkey Kong comes with his own special moves and unique weapon, just as all of the new characters would, but he also has unique abilities that weren't seen in the main game. Stuff like throwing allies across the map, or swinging on vines to reach distant platforms, really shakes up the tactical nature of the combat in new ways, keeping it fresh and keeping players on their toes. Rabbid Kranky Kong also comes with his own unique weapon and moveset, while Rabbid Peach has similar abilities to what she possessed in the game proper. Boss battles and mid-boss battles will also be found throughout the levels, as expected.
All in all, the DLC looks to be adding a bunch more to an already deep game, and it opens up the doors for even more additions like this in the future with other Nintendo characters; Donkey Kong feels right at home in the world of Mario + Rabbids. Right now, the content only has a release window of "later this Spring", which puts it at later this May or somewhere in June. If you've yet to get in on the tactical action that is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Ubisoft is planning on selling a retail version of the digital Gold Edition, which comes with the Season Pass. This retail version, however, will also come with the Donkey Kong Adventure DLC, so it will likely time out around its release. The game is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch!
