The developers over at Creative Assembly have announced that their recently released historical real-time strategy game Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is now coming to Linux. Kings will rise, and only one may rule as you fight to build your kingdom amid a sudden outbreak of war between Gaelic clans and Viking settlers. During this critical flashpoint in history, it's imperative you embark on this conquest with the utmost of valor.
The year is 878 AD, and the English King Alfred the Great has successfully formed a heroic defense of battle at Edington, halting the Viking invasion. For the first time in about 80 years, the Norse warlords have resided across Britain, and the lands lay in a delicate state of peace. Despite the calm, the kings of Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England begin to sense a time of change approaching and come to utilize this as an opportunity for change. Treaties will be made, wars will commence, and legends will dismantle at their core as a result.
As a standalone Total War game, Thrones of Britannia allows players to change or re-write these critical moments in history that eventually come to define contemporary Britain. Between the ten payable factions, you are expected to forge alliances in hopes of defending the glory of Anglo-Saxons, raise armies, and manage various settlements. Utilizing the most detailed Total War map to date, the conquest is as expansive as ever. Various updates to the original Total War mechanics have been included, ranging from recruitment, technologies, provinces, and politics. The experience is designed to deliver a more meaningful and immersive experience in comparison to its predecessors.
There are multiple strategic routes you may follow on the path to victory. You may complete a series of objectives that are uniquely based on your chosen faction’s history, build renown through construction, or expand upon territory through force of arms. Once you get a good feel for your bearings, you'll need to steady yourself for the late-game challenges and the final victory condition, so be sure you feel comfortable in the mode of strategy you choose to stick with.
Each one of the ten playable factions emerges from five different cultures that arrive with detailed historical backdrops. The Great Viking Army, Viking Sea Kings, Welsh Strat Clut, and various other dominant sects will be fully painted out, with their origins made abundantly clear. You'll learn that it was the Anglo-Saxon kingdom that provided the isles initial resistance against the malice of The Great Heathen Army after a dogged defense following a Danish invasion that set the foundation for uniting England under one ruler in 927 AD. The ravenous demeanor of the Vikings will be emulated just as vividly, only with a tad bit more disarray and characteristic stronghold.
While no specific date has been mentioned just yet, Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is expected to arrive on Steam for Linux sometime next month. If this seems like an interesting challenge, be sure to check out the trailer below.
